Is a U-tube manometer accurate enough for Gas Safe tightness testing? Yes — a correctly used U-tube manometer with red gauge fluid provides an accurate reading in millibars, and is a recognised method for gas tightness and let-by testing under Gas Safe requirements. Accuracy depends on holding the tube vertically and reading the fluid level correctly, so technique matters as much as the tool itself.
What’s the difference between a tightness test and a let-by test? A tightness test checks the entire installation for leaks by monitoring pressure drop over a set period after pressurising the system. A let-by test specifically checks whether a gas valve or appliance is fully shutting off gas flow when closed. Both use the same manometer, just applied to different points in the test procedure.
Can this be used for LPG as well as natural gas? Yes, the 0-30mbar range covers both natural gas and LPG testing pressures, which are broadly similar for domestic tightness testing purposes.
