Corrosion and scale inhibitor for central heating systems, protecting boilers, radiators and pipework. Required by most boiler manufacturers for warranty compliance.
Fernox F1 Protector is the industry-standard central heating inhibitor used by plumbers and heating engineers across the UK. It forms a protective barrier on internal metal surfaces within the heating system, preventing the electrochemical reactions that cause corrosion, sludge and limescale. Adding F1 after a system clean is not optional — it is a requirement of virtually every boiler manufacturer's warranty terms and is specified in BS 7593:2019 for the treatment of water in domestic heating systems.
Fernox F1 is one of those products that every plumber carries in their van. It is not glamorous, but it is essential. Without an inhibitor in the system water, central heating systems will corrode from the inside, producing black iron oxide sludge that blocks radiators, damages pump impellers and reduces boiler efficiency.
The inside of a central heating system is a hostile environment for metals. Steel radiators, copper pipes and aluminium heat exchangers all react with untreated water, creating corrosion products that circulate through the system as sludge. Limescale forms on the hottest surfaces — primarily the boiler heat exchanger — reducing heat transfer and increasing energy bills. F1 works by forming a thin protective film on metal surfaces that prevents these reactions from occurring.
Adding F1 is straightforward. The most common method is to pour it into a radiator via a bleed valve using the Fernox injector, though it can also be added through the filling loop. The key requirement is that the system must be clean before F1 is added — there is no point protecting a system that is already full of sludge. This is where Fernox F3 Cleaner comes in as a pre-treatment. Once added, F1 remains effective for at least five years, though the concentration should be checked at each boiler service using Fernox test strips.
Fernox F1 is a non-negotiable part of any central heating installation or service. It is cheap, effective and required for warranty compliance. Every system should have it, and every plumber should be adding it as standard practice. There is no good reason not to use it.
