Overview

Fernox F3 Cleaner is the companion product to Fernox F1 Protector and an essential part of the central heating maintenance process. It is a non-acidic cleaner designed to loosen and mobilise sludge, scale and corrosion debris that has accumulated inside radiators, boilers and pipework. The loosened contaminants are then flushed out of the system — either by draining and refilling or, more effectively, by power flushing — before F1 Protector is added to the clean system. This clean-then-protect approach is the standard procedure specified by boiler manufacturers and BS 7593:2019.

In-Depth Look

Central heating systems accumulate contamination over time. Iron oxide sludge from corroding radiators, limescale from hard water areas, and flux residue from the original installation all build up inside the pipework and components. The symptoms are familiar to any plumber — radiators with cold spots at the bottom, noisy boilers, pump failures and reduced efficiency. Fernox F3 is the first step in dealing with this.

The Clean-Then-Protect Process

The standard maintenance process for central heating systems follows a two-stage approach: clean with F3, then protect with F1. F3 is added to the system water and the heating is run normally for at least one hour, allowing the cleaner to circulate and loosen deposits. For systems with heavy contamination, it can be left circulating for up to seven days. The system is then drained and flushed — ideally power flushed — to remove the loosened contaminants. Once the flush water runs clear, the system is refilled and F1 Protector is added to prevent future contamination.

Power Flushing Companion

F3 is at its most effective when used as part of a power flush. The power flushing machine circulates water at high velocity through the system while F3 loosens the deposits, and individual radiators are isolated and flushed in turn. The combination of chemical cleaning and mechanical flushing produces the best results and is the recommended approach for systems that have never been treated or have been neglected for years.

Verdict

Fernox F3 is the essential first step in central heating system maintenance. It is not a standalone solution — it must be followed by thorough flushing and the addition of F1 Protector — but without it, cleaning a contaminated system effectively is significantly harder. A standard product that every plumber should carry alongside F1.

Who It's For

  • Plumbers and heating engineers cleaning systems during boiler installations and servicing
  • Power flush technicians preparing systems for treatment
  • Homeowners dealing with cold spots on radiators or noisy boilers caused by sludge

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Effectively loosens sludge and scale for removal during flushing
  • Non-acidic formula is safe for all system components including aluminium heat exchangers
  • Single 500ml bottle treats a full domestic system
  • Can be left in the system for up to a week for heavily contaminated systems

Cons

  • Requires the system to be flushed afterwards — adds time and effort to the job
  • Heavily contaminated systems may need multiple treatments or a full power flush
  • Does not provide ongoing protection — F1 must be added after cleaning
